Spooky Chess With 10 Columns - Two-Player Game
Board and Setup
The game board is an 8x10 grid, with each player controlling a set of pieces on opposite sides.
Pieces per Side:
- Gargoyle Guardian (Rook): 2
- Misty Phantom (Knight): 4
- Moonbeam Mage (Bishop): 2
- Wraith Queen: 1
- Spectral Sovereign (King): 1
- Shadow Sprite (Pawn): 10
Movement and Capture Rules
Gargoyle Guardian (Rook)
- Moves horizontally or vertically any number of squares, but cannot leave the king in check.
Misty Phantom (Knight)
- Moves in an "L" shape: two squares in one direction followed by one square perpendicular to that. Can jump over other pieces.
Moonbeam Mage (Bishop)
- Moves diagonally any number of squares, but cannot leave the king in check.
Wraith Queen
- Moves like a rook or bishop, covering any number of squares horizontally, vertically, or diagonally, but cannot leave the king in check.
Spectral Sovereign (King)
- Moves one square in any direction. Can castle once per game: moves two squares towards an unmoved and unobstructed rook, which then jumps over it to the adjacent square.
Shadow Sprite (Pawn)
- Moves forward one or two squares on its first move, but only if no piece is blocking. Thereafter, moves one square at a time.
- Captures diagonally by moving one square in an enemy direction.
- Can perform en passant: if a pawn moves two squares from its starting position and lands next to an opposing pawn, the opposing pawn can capture it as if it had only moved one square.
Special Rules
King Safety
- The king cannot be left in check. If a piece would put the king in check, that move is illegal.
Promotions
- When a Shadow Sprite (Pawn) reaches the opposite end of the board, it can transform into a Wraith Queen.
Castling
- The Spectral Sovereign (King) and one Gargoyle Guardian (Rook) must be unmoved and in their starting positions. The king moves two squares towards the rook, which then jumps over the king to the adjacent square.
Extra Turns
- When a piece is moved, it can trigger an extra turn if certain conditions are met:
- A Shadow Sprite (Pawn) moving two spaces on its first move triggers an extra turn.
- Moving a piece that has just been en passant-triggered also grants an extra turn.
Winning the Game
- The game ends when all characters of one team have been removed from the board. The remaining player wins the game.
Draw Rules
- There are no explicit draw rules defined in this version of Spooky Chess With 10 Columns.
